Rock climbing counter weights

This project was about re-designing ‘counter weights’ when rock climbing.

Traditional ground anchors/counter weights are usually bolts in the floor that the belayer will clip into if the person you are belaying as significantly heavier than you so you don’t get pulled up the wall if the climber falls.

Counterweights in indoor climbing centres are generally ‘sand bags’ which are big and bulky. Both of these ‘ground anchors’ hinder the mobility of the belayer greatly, especially if they need to move out the way of falling rocks or get a better view of the climber to assist them.

My design was to have a weight that can move with the belayer making them more mobile, such as a weight jacket, like scuba divers use to assist with their decent or athletes use in their training.
